Our Story

Bellevue Ave is more than just a place in Providence, Rhode Island—it is where Chef Demetrius Brown’s story begins. In the kitchen of his great-grandmother, the late Elizabeth Castle, he spent his formative years learning lessons that would shape his future in ways he could not yet understand.

Though he didn’t realize it at the time, the traditions and family recipes she shared would ignite a lifelong passion. That early foundation became a calling—one that would lead him on a powerful journey to honor and tell the often-overlooked stories of his ancestors through exceptional cuisine and authentic hospitality.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chef Demetrius began reminiscing and recreating many of the dishes he grew up eating, leading to the creation of Heritage Supper Club. What began as an idea quickly became a meaningful space where people could gather and rediscover a sense of connection through shared meals. It was an experience rooted in community, culture, and storytelling.

In 2022, Heritage Supper Club was named Best New Supper Club by Atlanta Magazine, a milestone that signaled it was time to grow. Chef Demetrius knew exactly who he needed by his side: Brandon Blanchard. The two had previously worked together in Serenbe, a biophilic community just outside Atlanta, where Brandon first recognized Demetrius’s remarkable talent and vision. Reuniting felt inevitable. Together, they combined culinary artistry with a deep understanding of hospitality, forming a partnership built to create something truly special.

From there, the team moved with purpose. Heritage Supper Club began traveling throughout the greater Atlanta area, hosting pop-ups everywhere from Airbnbs to warehouses to restaurants during off-hours. At one such restaurant, opportunity struck.

In search of a more consistent home, they approached the former owners of Bread & Butterfly in Inman Park about hosting a dinner residency. What began as a simple proposal quickly evolved into something much bigger—the chance to purchase their first brick-and-mortar location.

While preserving the café’s beloved breakfast and lunch offerings, Chef Demetrius gradually introduced his culinary perspective—one rooted in the African Diaspora. His menus reflect a global story shaped by migration, resilience, and cultural exchange, highlighting the flavors and traditions carried across continents and generations.

Under the leadership of Chef Demetrius and Brandon, Bread & Butterfly has received critical acclaim, including recognition as one of The New York Times’ 50 Best New Restaurants in America in 2024.

Now, the team is stepping into their next chapter. Their second brick-and-mortar concept, Heritage, represents the realization of a lifelong dream: to redefine fine dining while ensuring meaningful representation of Black and Brown voices within the space.

Together, these concepts live under the Bellevue Hospitality umbrella—a vision driven by purpose and possibility. This is more than a restaurant group. It is a movement, a narrative, and an invitation.

We invite you to join us on the journey.

“Everyone just calls her Grandma, whenever you would enter her home she would always offer you a plate of food.”
